Boredom Can Be a Sign of Success
Edwardâs technique was to do each step of his hierarchy until he was bored with it. âFor me, boredom was a good alternative to anxiety. I would sit in the car with the engine off until I started daydreaming. That meant I had achieved boredom. Then I did the same thing with the engine running. When my mind started wandering to other things in my life, my anxiety disappeared. Later I would drive to the foot of a short bridge and look at it until I was absolutely bored. That might take forty-five minutes. I would get so bored I would even look forward to the next step of driving on the bridge.â Because boredom is devoid of excitement or anxiety, it does not stimulate added adrenalin and can produce a physiological state similar to feeling calm. Naturally, daydreaming does not work as a relaxation method if you fill your mind with fearful thoughts, but if you keep your focus on the present situation, boredom can become a positive association.
How long do you need to practice? How often? How much is enough? Youâll know itâs enough when you donât dread or find excuses to avoid. Edwardâs instructor gave him a card that said, âThe sooner fear is faced, the better. The longer fear is faced, the better.â His program recommended that he practice for at least two hours twice a week. Edward did this so deliberately that one day a police officer stopped him to question why he kept driving back and forth on the main street. Edward explained that he was phobic and was just practicing his driving. The officer respected his explanation.
